Bearing no actual resemblence to its name. The artificial leaf, made of silicon electronics and other components, provides the same reaction to sun and water that an actual leaf would by converting it into energy. In theory one of these leaves that MIT researchers have designed submerged in a gallon of water and left out in the sun, could possibly power the common house for one day. And to my understanding its fairly cheap production cost wise at least. However we could see these mass marketed fairly soon!!
Nocera Lab and its artificial leaf arent the first to capture photosynthesis using catylists. However, this is the first reasonably priced material and lifespan. Using baseball card sized leaves containing nickel and cobalt the lab has seen 45 hours of constant power with no current drop. They will be working to raise length of life and efficiency in the future. But long story short is that is another step towards the Hydrogen based economy.
